Direction Before Going To The Sheriff’s Office

When I started looking up the directions for each county, there was something I forgot about. That is the city you live in.

In particular the police department in the city where you live. Some cities retain jurisdiction over Conceal Carry Permits. Others give it over to the sheriff’s department. So check with your local police agency to see if they issue the permit or does the sheriff.

Don’t assume it is the sheriff just because you live in a smaller community. I had assumed that when I started this blog. I knew larger cities in California, such as San Francisco, Los Angeles and even Sacramento (to name a few), retained jurisdiction. However, while I was researching and the reason I am writing this blog, I discovered several smaller cities and towns also retained jurisdiction, such as Davis, Whittier and Napa (again to name a few).

The interesting thing about the police retaining this power is you can get a second bit at the apple. What I mean by this is if you apply with the city and they deny you a permit, you can then apply with the sheriff’s office.

So check with your city police first. If they retain jurisdiction, apply with them first. If they do not or you get turned down than apply with your county sheriff.

CCW Process in the different counties in California

Over the next few weeks I will be discussing the process to get a Concealed Carry Permit in the state of California.

If you do not know, this process can be some what confusing as there is not a state wide process. Each differs from one county to the next and the shooting qualifications are a little different.

However, the good news is the application itself is the same throughout the state.

Please be patient as I will be working my way from Solano county outward. If you want to request to cover your county, please email me with your county and I will give the requested county priority, in the order received.

I may just put up a list of the order of counties later but for now Solano will be the first followed by Contra Costa.
